What is Carbuncle?

Carbuncle is an infectious gangrene of the skin and subcutaneous tissue caused by staphyococcus aurieus.


It is common in diabetics and elderly population.


It usually occurs on the neck, back and shoulder regions.


It starts out with pain and swelling and as time progresses, it leads to pus formation and multiple poring points.


The skin around the lesion red, with swelling and is extremely painful.


Signs and Symptoms:


Pain. swelling, redness, pus poring, movement restrictions, fever, general weakness.

In more severe cases, if left untreated, it may lead to septic shock.


Diagnosis:


TLC, ESR, Serum Creatinine, Serum Lactate Levels and CRP.


Treatments:


Surgery is the best treatment for carbuncle.
